The TVC reported on an incident on a flight where Sen. Chuck Schumer argued with a flight attendant about turning off his cell phone,  (the permalink to this page was not working), criticized climate change expert Al Goreacle for erroneous statements, and criticized President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid for going “on one of the wildest spending binges in American history.”

An email from the TVC asked for “tax deductible” donations, and a second email linked to articles on TVC’s website.

TVC’s Andrea Lafferty criticized the nomination of Chai Feldblum to the EEOC and also criticized her views on “sexual liberty.”

Lafferty also criticized Sen. Harry Reid for his statements comparing Republican opposition of health care reform to opposition of abolishing slavery.  She quoted herself and accused Reid of getting his history wrong.  She said:

“Senator Reid needs a history lesson,” said TVC Executive Director Andrea Lafferty. “It was the Republicans who fought against slavery in the 1860s, not the Democrats. And, it was the southern Democrats who fought against the civil rights movement in the 1960s. The Senator should take a refresher course on American history at a local community college before he spouts off again on the Senate floor.

“His comments are insulting not just to the Republican Senators who oppose socialized medicine and his tax hikes, but he’s insulted every American who is well-informed and knows what he’s doing to destroy our health care system. He owes all of us an apology. We are demanding it.”

Traditional Values Coalition: Burqa Barbie

by Jessica Bryan

In her latest post, TVC’s Andrea Lafferty expresses outrage in response to Mattel’s newest Barbie doll: “Burqa Barbie.”  Here are some excerpts  from her post:

…So I hope under that brightly colored burqa the new Mattel doll is badly bruised and has a frightened look on her face because most women in burqas are severely abused women.

…Shariah law is a despicable and anti-Constitutional throwback to the Dark Ages when rights were reserved only for males of certain religions. It is the opposite of America where we guarantee rights equally to every person, except the unborn.

Mattel could do a public service by distributing a “Rifqa Bary” Barbie doll which resembles the young Muslim woman in Ohio whose radical parents intend to kill her because she has professed her belief in Jesus Christ.

…The doll would need to look radiant and courageous like the real Rifka but it would be easy to accessorize. A miniature Bible could be tucked under her arm. And a set of cowardly politicians could be enclosed and they would do absolutely nothing just like they did in the real government hearings in Florida and Ohio.

An email from the TVC argues that several of the bills and nominations that will be voted on in the next month will “threaten religious freedom, our children, and our health care system.”  The TVC asked for readers to contact their senators.  The email also linked to several of the posts from the TVC website (from “Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) Threatens the Practice of Religion & Our Nation’s Children” through “Reid ‘Health Care’ Reform Bill Increases Premiums by $3,100 Yearly and Funds Abortion!”).

In an email entitled “Senate Turkeys Ramming Tax Funded Abortion,” the TVC discussed the (then) upcoming Saturday Senate cloture vote to bring the health care reform bill to the floor for debate.  The email also provided information for how to contact your senators.

The Manhattan Declaration: Christians Unite on Life, Marriage, & Liberty

by Tobin Grant

Yesterday, a coalition of Christian leaders (some political, some not) announced the “Manhattan Declaration“.  Most of the leaders were Evangelicals, but conservative leaders from Anglican, Catholic, and Orthodox churches were also signatories.

The Declaration is a call “to reaffirm fundamental truths about justice and the common good…These truths are:

  1. the sanctity of human life
  2. the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife
  3. the rights of conscience and religious liberty.”

You can read more about the Declaration at the NYT.

Most of the signatories are conservatives, both politically and religiously.  However, there were many influential conservative groups that are part of this coalition.  Here is a breakdown of which of the groups we tracked signed the Declaration.

Groups that were original signatories:

  • ADF
  • Al Mohler
  • Chuck Colson/Break Point
  • Ethics and Public Policy Center
  • Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and Richard Land
  • Evangelicals for Social Action
  • Family Research Council
  • Focus on the Family Action
  • Institute on Religion and Democracy
  • National Association of Evangelicals
  • Susan B. Anthony List

Groups that were not original signatories:

  • ACLJ
  • AFA
  • AUL
  • CBN
  • Center for Just Society
  • Center for Moral Clarity
  • CWA
  • Faith in Public Life
  • Liberty Counsel
  • National Right to Life Committee

An email from the TVC urged subscribers to contact their representative (and provides the subscriber with the name and phone number your their respective representative) and urge them to vote no on the health care reform bill, which the group argues provides funding for abortion.
